Beaches and Islands

La Longère Charentaise is well placed for easy access to a number of fine Atlantic beaches and islands. Full details of these can be found in the english language version of the Charente-Maritime Tourist Guide.

The nearest beach is at Fouras some twenty miles north of La Longère. A few miles further, just south of La Rochelle there is the beach at Châtelaillon-Plage. The largest beach in the area is at Saint Georges de Didonne just south of Royan.

Just offshore and connected to mainland by some rather impressive bridges there are the holiday islands of  the Ile de Ré and the  Ile de Oleron. The Ile de Ré is a very chic, serene island with more cycle paths than roads, in comparison the Ile de Oleron is more family focused with campsites, a Water Park and many good beaches.

The Ile de Aix can only be accessed by ferry from Fouras and is best explored by cycle as there are very few vehicles on the island. The smallest of the islands is the Ile d’Madam which can only be accessed via causeway on foot at low tide.
